Couple of days ago, I rend a DVD called " Casanova", it's a story about Giacomo Casanova, a Venetian lovers.
According to history and Casanova's autobiography, he was probably bisexual, and had more than one lover in the same time. Giamoco was also attracted to young girls, and tried incest.
Some people said Casanova is smiliar with Don Juan, but unlike Don Juan, Casanova is a historial character.
He reminds me of a famour french in 18th century, Marquis de Sade.
Marquis de Sade was born as " Donatien Alphonse François, [le] Marquis de Sade"(after his father died, he became Marquis de Sade). About 4 years ago, the Chinese edition " The 120 days of Sodom" was published. I bouthgt one and read it. Only the chapter 1 is finished, the rest of the manuscript was believed to have been lost during the storming of the Bastille.
Of course Casanova wasn't Marquis de Sade, but in some way, I think they are very similar. fisrtly, they were highly educated, both talked a lot about philosophy (although the topics were totally different), and their sexual desire was very different from other people. They were considered heretics in their time. Casanova was prisonned because he was suspected to try to rape a girl who was under 18. Marquis de Sade was prisonned because Napoléon Bonaparte ordered to arrest the anonymous author of "Justine", and Marquis de Sade was arrested in the publisher's place.
That's why I've decided to rent the movie "Quill", before the ball pen and fountain pen were invented, people used quill to write. The movie tells the story after Marquis de Sade was arrested in the publisher's place. He was put in the asylum at Charenton, it was a hospital for abnormal patients, mostly were insane. The "hospital" was hold by Abbé de Coulmier, a young priest.
During the time in Charenton, Marquis de Sade had a relationship with a young girl Madeleine Leclerc, employee of Charenton. This affair lasted for 4 years, until Marquis de Sade died in 1814.
Guessing the movie was rewrite. In the story, the government sent a new director to took place of Abbé de Coulmier, the director was a doctor, who was famous for his cruel treatments to psycho. But Abbé de Coulmier didn't leave, because he liked Madeleine Leclerc. After the doctor took place, he tried his treatment to every patient there, and drove them crazy, became violent.
Everyone's gone mad, and Charenton was in a mass. One of the patient was influenced by Sade's work, and cut Madeleine Leclerc's tongue, threw her into a big, deep tub. Madeleine Leclerc died in a miserable way.
Abbé de Coulmier was told it's all because of Sade's work, and Sade was punished, he was forced to cut his tongue, and prisonned in a basement. When the last time Abbé de Coulmier went to see him, he was so ill that he could hardly say a word. In Abbé de Coulmier's arms, Sade comitted suicide.
The story wasn't end, Abbé de Coulmier had an illusion of having sex with Madeleine Leclerc when he saw her corpse. And then he had gone insane, too, just like Sade.
After it, he was prisonned, then the new priest came................

A very horrible, and impressive movie it is. And the actors were great, too. One of my favourite actor Joaquin Phoenix( "j" is pronunced as"h", because it is a spanish name), who played the roman emperor in movie "Gladiator" , played "Abbé de Coulmier", and Geffery Rush played Sade. They are really great actors. I especially like the part when Abbé de Coulmier has the illusion of having sex with Madeleine, and when Sade was writing and thinking of his new books and plays.
